  • Canola oil might be the most maligned oil at the grocery store. “Canola sometimes gets a bad rap because it’s a seed oil, but I don’t recommend avoiding it,” says Diane Lindsay-Adler, a registered dietitian nutritionist and assistant professor at New York Medical College. When canola oil is grouped with other seed oils, people blame it for various health problems. The issue isn’t really with the oil itself, though; rather, seed oils are often found in calorie-dense ultra-processed foods that don’t contain many other important nutrients — think packaged cookies and chips. While cutting back on those foods is a good idea for health, you don’t have to stop using canola oil in your cooking at home, especially since it tends to be an affordable choice. “It’s very low in saturated fat and provides both Monounsaturated Fatty Acid and Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, including the plant-based omega-3 ALA.” She also points to a 2024 study suggesting that canola oil can lower total and LDL cholesterol.
